True to his baseball tools, speedy outfielder A.J. Ewing made a rapid rise through the minors. He’s certainly off to a fast start with the New York Mets, too. Called up by the struggling Mets after just 12 games at Triple-A Syracuse, the 21-year-old Ewing was impressive in his major league debut Tuesday night. Playing center field and batting eighth, he ripped an RBI triple in the seventh inning for his first career hit in a 10-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Ewing also walked three times, scored twice, drove in two runs and stole a base. New York brought Ewing to the majors after he had played only 58 games above High-A ball.

The San Francisco Giants traded struggling two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians. The Giants received minor league left-hander Matt Wilkinson and the 29th pick in the 2026 amateur draft in the trade. Cleveland optioned Bo Naylor to Triple-A Columbus to make room for Bailey. Naylor has been the Guardians’ regular catcher since 2023. Bailey has been regarded as one of the top defensive catchers in the game thanks in part to his elite pitch-framing skills since being called up in 2023. But his hitting has been an issue. Bailey was batting .146 with one homer, five RBIs in 89 plate appearances with a .396 OPS.

The struggling Arizona Diamondbacks have shaken up their roster a bit. The Diamondbacks promoted their top prospect, outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt, from the minors and designated veteran Alek Thomas for assignment on Friday. The 23-year-old Waldschmidt was batting .289 with three homers, 22 RBIs and an .877 OPS at Triple-A Reno. He was the 31st pick in the 2024 amateur draft out of Kentucky. Waldschmidt was not in the starting lineup Friday night against the Mets but he singled in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter. Thomas was batting .181 with two homers in 100 plate appearances this season.

The Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A manager says he was fired this week after sending an “inappropriate” text message to a female colleague. The Tigers announced Tuesday that Gabe Alvarez had been fired for what they called a “violation of club policy,” but they did not specify the violation. Alvarez told ESPN on Wednesday that he sent “a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke. The 52-year-old Alvarez played parts of three big league seasons as a third baseman for Detroit and the San Diego Padres before working as an assistant coach with USC. He was hired as a minor league hitting coordinator by Detroit in 2021, began managing Double-A Erie in 2022 and was promoted to managing Triple-A Toledo in 2025.

Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd is going to have surgery after he injured his left knee while hanging out with his kids. Boyd had an MRI that showed a meniscus issue, and manager Craig Counsell says the team isn’t sure how long the left-hander is going to be out. Boyd was placed on the 15-day injured list before Chicago beat Cincinnati 7-6 for its eighth straight win. Right-hander Trent Thornton was brought up from Triple-A Iowa, and left-hander Charlie Barnes was designated for assignment. The 35-year-old Boyd is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA. Counsell says Boyd got hurt when he sat down with his kids and got back up.

Kansas City Royals left-hander Cole Ragans left his start against Cleveland after three scoreless innings because of left triceps and elbow soreness. Luinder Avila started warming up in the bottom of the third and entered to start the fourth. Ragans, 28, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four, throwing 58 pitches. He is 1-4 with a 4.84 ERA. this season.  Ragans had Tommy John surgery in both 2018 and 2019 while in the Texas minor league system.

Michael Massey hit a two-run homer and Isaac Collins also went deep as the Kansas City Royals ran their win streak to five with a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Salvador Perez also drove in a pair of runs for Kansas City. Stephen Kolek was the beneficiary of the offense, allowing a three-run shot by Rhys Hoskins but little else over six innings. Kolek won in his season debut. He had been rehabbing at Triple-A Omaha after hurting his oblique in his first start of spring training. Lucas Erceg got his third save in four games and his 10th of the season. Gavin Williams allowed five runs and eight hits and two walks for Cleveland.

Travis Bazzana knew he was going to be nervous making his major-league debut until he took his first at-bat and fielded his first ground ball. After that, everything felt normal again. Bazzana, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 amateur draft, went 0 for 2 with two walks in his major league debut for the Cleveland Guardians in Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The 23-year-old Bazzana found out on Sunday after Triple-A Columbus’ doubleheader at Buffalo that he was going to be called up. The move was made official on Tuesday when Juan Brito was optioned to Columbus.

Travis Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 amateur draft, will be called up by the Cleveland Guardians and could make his major-league debut during Tuesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, a person familiar with the move told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Guardians have not announced the roster move. The 23-year-old second baseman is the top prospect in the Guardians’ organization. Pinch hitter Hao-Yu Lee hit his first MLB home run and Spencer Torkelson homered for the fifth straight game as the Detroit Tigers avoided a series sweep with an 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Torkelson tied a Tigers record by homering in five consecutive games, joining Rudy York, Hank Greenberg, Vic Wertz, Willie Horton and Marcus Thames. JJ Bleday, making his Reds debut after being recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday, tied the score 2-all in the fourth with a 403-foot homer to center. Brant Hurter (3-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to earn the victory for Detroit.
