Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dane Myers has gone on the 10-day injured list with a bruised left shoulder one day after crashing into an outfield wall and getting carted off the field. The Reds announced the move before their Tuesday night game with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds also activated reliever Emilio Pagán from the 15-day injured list, optioned right-handed pitcher Zach McCambley to Triple-A Louisville and selected utilityman Ivan Johnson from Louisville. Myers’ left shoulder hit the wall as he made a running backhanded catch during the Reds’ 5-3 loss to the Brewers on Monday.
Carlos Mendoza has been fired as manager of the underperforming New York Mets and replaced by Andy Green. Last-place New York was 34-47 halfway through a miserable season, 15 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta and 9 1/2 games back of the final NL wild-card berth. Mets owner Steve Cohen had high expectations for a team without a World Series title since 1986. The club opened the season with baseball’s highest payroll at $358 million and was projected to pay an additional $124 million in luxury tax. A former major league infielder, Green had been working in the Mets' front office running the farm system. He was given the title of interim manager for the rest of the season.
Cooper Ingle made his major league debut when the Guardians faced the Seattle Mariners. The 24-year old Ingle batted fifth and was in the designated hitter spot on Friday night after he was called up from Triple-A Columbus. The Guardians are 3-6 since All-Star third baseman José Ramírez broke a bone in his left hand during the fifth inning of the June 13 game against Detroit. Cleveland has a .193 batting average in its last nine games, second-worst in the majors. It is 13 for 73 with 34 strikeouts during the same stretch with runners in scoring position. Ingle had a .284 batting average with 41 RBIs in 51 games with Columbus.
The Chicago White Sox have activated Kyle Teel from the 60-day injured list and optioned fellow catcher Edgar Quero to Triple-A Charlotte. Teel was in the starting lineup for his season debut, batting fourth in the opener of a three-game series against AL Central-leading Cleveland. The 24-year-old Teel strained his right hamstring while playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. Then he hurt his right knee while playing for Charlotte on a rehab assignment. Teel, a first-round pick in the 2023 amateur draft, was acquired by Chicago in the Garrett Crochet trade in December 2024. He hit .273 with eight homers and 35 RBIs in 78 games last year in his first action with the White Sox.
Cleveland outfielder Chase DeLauter has become the latest Guardians position player to go on the injured list. The team announced the move before Wednesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The rookie fractured a rib on his right side Saturday when he collided with the outfield wall. The Guardians recalled outfielder Kahlil Watson from Triple-A Columbus to fill DeLauter’s spot on the roster. DeLauter’s injury came during a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in which seven-time All-Star third baseman José Ramírez and outfielder Angel Martínez also were hurt. All three players are now on the injured list.
Cooper Pratt has reached the major leagues 2 ½ months after the Milwaukee Brewers signed the shortstop prospect to an eight-year, $50.75 million contract. Pratt made his major league debut and went 0 for 3 in a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night after getting called up from Triple-A Nashville. They made room for Pratt by designating third baseman Luis Rengifo for assignment. Brewers officials showed their faith in Pratt when they signed him on April 3 to an eight-year deal that includes club options for 2034 and 2035.
The Chicago White Sox have traded veteran outfielder Derek Hill to the Philadelphia Phillies in a swap between contending teams. The White Sox also sent $250,000 in international bonus pool money to the Phillies for minor league outfielder Dylan Campbell and minor league infielder José Colmenares. The 30-year-old Hill is batting .213 with four homers, eight RBIs and seven steals in 50 games this season. The move adds to Philadelphia’s outfield depth after Adolis García departed Wednesday night’s 7-4 victory at Toronto because of a pulled muscle in his right shoulder.
Two-time reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal will return to Detroit’s starting lineup against Cleveland. Manager A.J. Hinch announced that Skubal will return Saturday and added that right-hander Casey Mize could return Sunday if he completes another bullpen session this week. Skubal had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow in early May. He has made one rehab start, allowing two hits over five shutout innings for Detroit’s High-A affiliate. Skubal is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts. He last pitched for the Tigers on April 29.
Corey Seager homered to end a career-worst 0-for-29 slump after being activated from the injured list. The five-time All-Star shortstop had missed 19 games for the Texas Rangers because of lower back inflammation. Seager hadn't played since May 13 before the 3-2 win over Cleveland on Friday night. The Rangers also activated Wyatt Langford, who doubled ahead of Seager's homer in the sixth inning. The outfielder missed 39 games with a right forearm strain. To make room on the roster, Cody Freeman and Alejandro Osuna were optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. Seager and Langford played in two rehab games together at Double-A Frisco.
Just baseball.
