The Scripps National Spelling Bee runs from Tuesday through Thursday this week. The bee began in 1925, with this year marking its 98th edition. After a long run at a convention center in suburban Maryland, the bee returns to the nation's capital this year at Constitution Hall near the White House. Mina Kimes of ESPN has joined the broadcast as its host. The bee airs on ION and other channels owned by the Cincinnati-based media company Scripps. The champion of the bee receives more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. Thirty of the past 36 champions have come from families of Indian heritage.

Juan Soto, A.J. Minter and Jared Young returned to the New York Mets on Tuesday, when the last-place club’s depth was challenged again by the loss of outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the 10-day injured list due to a right hip flexor strain. Soto, who missed two games due to an illness, was in the lineup as the designated hitter, batting third, in the middle game of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Young was batting fifth and playing first base in his first action since April 12, when he tore his left meniscus. Minter hasn’t pitched since April 26, 2025, due to a torn left lat. The left-hander also battled a sore left hip earlier this month.
Chase Burns tossed 5 1/3 strong innings and won his fourth straight start Tuesday night for the Cincinnati Reds, who beat the Mets 7-2, dropping New York 11 games under .500 — tying a season-high. The Mets, who ended April at 10-21, have lost five straight to fall to 22-33. They have scored just six runs and collected 25 hits during the losing streak — their second-longest of the season behind a 12-game skid from April 8-21. Eugenio Suárez and Elly De La Cruz each had two-run doubles off David Peterson (3-5), who also gave up a pair of RBI hits to Tyler Stephenson. Sal Stewart added a run-scoring single in the eighth.
James Wood hit a two-run homer and Keibert Ruiz had a two-run single in the second inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 on Tuesday night. Wood’s towering, 401-foot drive to right field was his 15th homer of the season and second in as many days against AL Central-leading Cleveland. Wood leads the majors with 49 runs and ranks third with 29 extra-base hits. The Nationals won their fourth straight and improved to 19-11 on the road.
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene took another step in his rehab from elbow surgery Tuesday afternoon, when he threw 15 to 20 pitches during a side session at the club’s spring training facility in Arizona. Greene, who was the Reds’ Opening Day starter in 2023 and 2025, had bone chips removed on March 11. Cincinnati expected him to be sidelined 14 to 16 weeks.
Bob Horner, the power-hitting third baseman who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 1978 and hit a home run in his debut with the Atlanta Braves after skipping the minor leagues, has died. He was 68. The Braves say they were informed of Horner’s death in Texas by his wife, Chris. Horner hit 218 homers in his 10-year career, including nine seasons with the Braves. He joined Dale Murphy to form the heart of the Braves’ lineup through much of the 1980s. In his debut, Horner hit a homer off Bert Blyleven of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon didn’t completely back down from her assertion a small player can’t lead his team to the NBA championship now that Jalen Brunson has taken the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals. Hammon made her initial comments on ESPN in December 2023, saying the Knicks couldn’t win the championship if the 6-foot-2 Brunson was their best player. Those comments have generated some buzz after Brunson received the Larry Bird Trophy for MVP of the Eastern Conference finals after the Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night.
