James Harden hit three clutch shots in the final two minutes, Donovan Mitchell scored 35 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Detroit 116-109 on Saturday to cut the Pistons’ lead to 2-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. Harden bounced back from two mistake-marred performances to finish with 19 points and Jarrett Allen scored 18 for the Cavaliers, who will look to even the series when they host Game 4 on Monday night. Mitchell reached 2,000 career postseason points in his 73rd game. Detroit’s Cade Cunningham had his second career postseason triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, but also committed eight turnovers. Tobias Harris added 21 points.
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II wanted a change of scenery, so he asked for a trade. Now he’s a free agent. After being unable to find a trade partner, the Colts released the 2021 Pro Bowler to give him more time to find a new team. The Colts also released safety Nasir Adderley, who was trying to come back after spending the past three seasons out of the game. Moore was a multiyear captain for the Colts and their 2025 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for his work in the community.
Daniss Jenkins goes from being an undrafted free agent on a 2-way contract to key player for Pistons
After being overlooked for much of his career, Daniss Jenkins has played himself into a key role with the Detroit Pistons. The former two-way player got 29 minutes of playing time in Detroit's Game 1 win over Cleveland. The reserve guard had 12 points and three assists, bringing the ball up the court at times to give Cade Cunningham a break. He also had playoff career highs with seven rebounds and four steals. Jenkins was undrafted out of St. John's in 2024 and was playing on a two-way contract just a few months ago.
WNBA general managers have voted Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson as the favorite to be named the league's Most Valuable Player. An annual survey of the 15 general managers that was released Tuesday ahead of the league’s 30th season also had the Aces as the favorites to win the championship. Wilson received 60% of the votes for MVP followed by the New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart with 27% and the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark and the Atlanta Dream’s Allisha Gray with 7% each. Wilson won MVP last season and the Aces were league champs.
All-conference point guard Markus Burton has officially joined the Indiana Hoosiers from Notre Dame, second-year coach Darian DeVries has announced. The 5-foot-11 Burton is one of two top 25 players DeVries plucked out of this year’s transfer portal. Burton was limited to only 10 games last season because of an injury to his left ankle. He averaged 18.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 48.9% from the field and 30.6% on 3-pointers. The 2023 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball Award winner finished his Notre Dame career with 1,315 points, 232 rebounds, 259 assists and 123 steals in 69 career games.
Since joining Chip Ganassi Racing six seasons ago, Spanish driver Alex Palou has shown to be a generational talent who is quickly working his way through IndyCar’s record books. For that, Palou has earned a multi-year contract extension on his current deal that ran through the 2027 season. The extension was finalized following this week’s two-day Indianapolis 500 test. Ganassi never publicly discloses contract terms. The reward capped a celebratory week for Palou, who drove into Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the defending Indy 500 winner for testing and saw a larger-than-life banner of himself chugging the traditional winner’s milk.
James Harden garnered the most attention for the series of moves the Cleveland Cavaliers made near the NBA trade deadline. However, the Cavaliers would have been in dire straits on Wednesday night without Dennis Schroder. Schroder scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers came back to beat the Toronto Raptors 125-120 Wednesday night in Game 5 of their first-round series. Schroder — acquired from the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 1 along with Keon Ellis — finished with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, including three 3-pointers, in 21 minutes. This is the 17th time Schroder has scored at least 19 points in a playoff game. He had 20 for Detroit in Game 2 of its first-round series against New York last year.
Alex Cora was offered a managerial position by the Philadelphia Phillies after being fired by the Boston Red Sox. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski reached out to Cora, but he declined for family reasons. The Phillies then appointed Don Mattingly as interim manager after firing Rob Thomson on Tuesday. Thomson had led the team to multiple playoff appearances, including the 2022 World Series, but the team struggled this season. Mattingly, a former Yankees great, will now work alongside his son, the Phillies' general manager. The Phillies hope Mattingly can turn the season around and aim for a wild-card spot.
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has taken an indefinite leave of absenceto enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction. Texas Tech says it is “committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.” Sorsby was one of the biggest names in this year’s transfer portal. He arrived from Cincinnati, which announced in February it would sue the quarterback for breaching his name, image and likeness contract. He began his college career at Indiana.
The Cincinnati Reds have placed designated hitter Eugenio Suárez on the 10-day injured list with a mild left oblique strain. The move is retroactive to April 23. Suárez was scratched from the lineup for Friday night's series opener against the Detroit Tigers after feeling some discomfort during batting practice. Suárez returned to Cincinnati after signing a one-year, $15 million free-agent contract in February. He is batting .231 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 25 games. He was expected to add some punch to the middle of the Reds’ order along with rookie Sal Stewart and shortstop Elly De La Cruz.
