A federal appeals court has upheld a civil jury's decision requiring President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million to columnist E. Jean Carroll. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected Trump's appeal on Monday, affirming the damages as fair and reasonable. The award included $65 million in punitive damages. It stemmed from Trump's repeated social media attacks against Carroll after she accused him of sexual assault in the 1990s. A separate jury also awarded Carroll $5 million in a 2023 sexual assault and defamation case. Trump's lawyers had sought a new trial, but the court's decision maintains the original judgment.
