It comes as the district faces what's projected to be a $188 million shortfall in its 2026-27 budget.

Community members in the Shawnee neighborhood held a small news conference Wednesday at King Elementary School, speaking out against the announced closure of two schools in the district and making a strong push for the opening of a charter school instead.

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Brian Yearwood said Friday that his proposal to close two schools and consolidate or move several others will save the district $4 million out of $132 million it needs to cut before next school year.
