LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Make some more room in the Racing Louisville FC trophy case. The young franchise has won another cup, this time across the equator.
On Thursday night in São Paulo, Racing claimed its second Women’s Cup title, outlasting Brazilian power Palmeiras in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Arena Barueri.
Four years after Racing goalkeeper Katie Lund played the hero’s role in a Women's Cup title -- scoring and then saving a penalty kick in an 11-round shootout -- Racing keeper Jordyn Bloomer rose to the occasion in the penalty round.
She recorded two saves in the shootout, Savannah DeMelo converted, and Palmeiras’ final attempt sailed high to seal the 3-2 edge on penalties.
“This was incredible,” Bloomer said. “This was my first time really being able to compete for a trophy with this club. I just feel so honored and so grateful that I got to be on the field for this one and to be able to bring it back home to Louisville.”
Racing first lifted The Women’s Cup in 2021, winning the inaugural tournament by defeating Germany’s Bayern Munich at Lynn Family Stadium. Lund won player of the match for her heroics. This time, Bloomer won the honor, just days after helping Racing advance past São Paulo FC on penalties in the semifinal.
The scoring opened in the 39th minute when Emma Sears finished off a perfectly weighted ball from captain Arin Wright, tucking her shot off the post and in. Palmeiras equalized early in the second half on a header from Brena, setting the stage for another shootout — and another Bloomer breakthrough.
“I’m feeling a little speechless right now,” Bloomer said. “This has been my first almost two and a half months of being a starter, so this whole experience has been a whirlwind. To be able to be honored with some awards like this is absolutely incredible.”
Racing now turns its focus back to the NWSL regular season, where it has surged into playoff contention by winning five of its last seven league matches. The club returns to Lynn Family Stadium on Friday, Aug. 1, to host the first-place Kansas City Current.
Themed “Down the Stretch Night” — a nod to both horse racing and the playoff chase — the evening will feature a T-shirt giveaway and more. Tickets and details are available at RacingLouFC.com/stretch.
