LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With major changes looming across college athletics, the University of Louisville is bringing in a well-known player in sports business.
Andrew Brandt, a longtime NFL executive and nationally recognized sports law expert, has joined U of L athletics as a strategic advisor — helping the department navigate the shift toward revenue-sharing with athletes and a more professionalized college model.
Brandt, a former vice president of the Green Bay Packers, now serves as executive director of the Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law at Villanova University. He's also a columnist for Sports Illustrated, host of The Business of Sports podcast and a leading national voice on the legal and financial side of sports.
"As college athletics evolves into something more professional, we're positioning Louisville to lead — not follow," said Josh Heird, U of L vice president and director of athletics. "Andrew is one of the most respected minds in the business. His insights give us a real edge during this pivotal moment."
Brandt steps in at a critical time. With new rules around Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), the push for athlete revenue-sharing, and growing involvement from player representatives, schools now face challenges that once belonged to pro franchises. Louisville is hoping Brandt's experience — in both the NFL and college athletics — can help shape a forward-looking approach.
He will advise the department on everything from student-athlete contracts and NIL strategy to agent relations and long-term financial planning.
"This is a transformational time in college sports," Brandt said. "It's been a privilege to work with Louisville athletics. Josh Heird is a visionary, and his team is proactive and collaborative. Louisville isn't just preparing for the future — they're helping shape it."
Heird previously worked with Brandt while at Villanova and said the partnership has already helped Louisville take concrete steps toward long-term solutions.
"We brought Andrew in early last year knowing what was coming," Heird said. "He's helped us structure fair, sustainable athlete agreements and think through every decision with a pro sports lens. We're lucky to have him in our corner."
