Federal authorities have set up checkpoints around the nation's capital, asking people for their immigration status and detaining them. President Donald Trump claims a crime crisis requires this intervention, despite statistics showing the problem was waning. Immigration enforcement seems to be a priority, with over a third of those arrested being in the country illegally. Hundreds of federal agents and National Guard soldiers have surged into Washington, creating tense confrontations. The White House reports 630 arrests since August 7. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledges the proliferation of traffic checkpoints, raising concerns among residents.
