LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It won't be long before leaves start to fall. And while it's work to rake them up, it's worth your time to make sure your lawn is healthy next spring.
Brownsboro Hardware and Paint's Jim Lehrer explains all the equipment you need to make an easy job of keeping leaves off your lawn. There are several types of rakes for the job. Many homeowners opt for a lightweight plastic rake with a fan shaped head to keep leaves cleaned up. Other flat or straight rakes with metal heads are meant for moving soil.
Â
There are also several tools for keeping bags open. There are tarps, special chutes and even a flattened cardboard box that can help make leaf disposal a one person job.
New rules in Louisville for biodegradable yard waste bags:Â
Plastic bags are no longer acceptable ways to get rid of yard waste in Louisville.Effective January 1, 2015, yard waste set out for collection must be in one of the following containers: reusable bin, paper yard waste bag or compostable plastic bag meeting ASTM D6400 standards. Â For information on the new law, CLICK HERE.
Collection within the Urban Service District:
Yard waste is picked up separately from household garbage on a once a week, Monday thru Friday schedule. It is collected on the same day as your recycling, so sufficiently separate yard waste from your orange recycling bin.
There is no limit on the number of bags or cans of yard waste that may be set out for collection. The same Holiday Collection Schedule applies as stated under Residential Garbage. Guidelines for collection of yard waste:
Â
Yard waste may be set out in garbage cans, paper bags, or compostable bags as long as each can or bag weighs no more than 60 pounds and can be easily lifted by the average person.
Collection outside the Urban Service District:
Residential yard waste collection within the suburban areas (outside the former City of Louisville) is the responsibility of the individual residents/property owners and is contracted through private waste haulers. These entities are listed in the Yellow Pages under "Garbage & Rubbish Removal." Your private waste hauler can provide you with a collection schedule and guidelines for pickup.
Feeding your lawn in the fall:
The perfect time to think about your lawn for next spring is in October and November. Fall fertilizing allows your lawn to store the needed nutrients to stay healthy through the long dormant winter period. Time your spreading a month before the first frost is predicted. Â The best application is a weed-and-feed type product. Look for a fall feeder that is high in potassium and phosphorus. Read the package instructions to apply correctly.
