LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — There is a lot you can do with a pillowy, semi-sweet yeast pastry.

WDRB's Keith Kaiser stopped by American Kolache (kuh-laa-chee) for the experience.

An American kolache is a hand-held pastry made of a soft, slightly sweet yeast dough stuffed with either sweet or savory fillings.

Czech immigrants brought the traditional Central European fruit pastry to Texas. The Americanized version has evolved to include meats, cheeses, and breakfast foods. Think of it as a Texas Roadhouse roll stuffed with goodness!

Bryan & Denine Barrett got hooked on the flavor and opened an American Kolache on Bardstown Road on Feb. 27 to rave reviews.

The franchise is based out of St. Louis and is called St. Louis Kolache. The extension of the franchise is called American Kolache with locations in MO, KS, IL, IN, WV, VA, AL, and Louisville.

They have about 30 varieties of breakfast and lunch items with only 6 or 7 sweet versions.

A few items rotate including seasonally choices, like Turkey & Dressing, Corned Beef & Cabbage, and Crab Rangoon.
