The growing season has begun! That means frost advisories and freeze warnings will now be issued by the National Weather Service as needed. Just as a quick refresher, frost forms when temperatures drop to 36 degrees. A freeze will occur when temperatures reach or fall below 32 degrees. While some plants are able to with stand a brief period at or just below 32 degrees, most plants will not survive once temperatures drop to or below 28 degrees. We classify that as a killing freeze because of the extensive damage it can do.
Take a look around and you will see flowers blooming, trees budding, and many people are eager to get their hands dirty. Any plants that you want to protect need to be covered up or brought inside by Friday night. I can guarantee frost on Saturday morning, Louisville will drop down to the freezing mark, and rural locations that typically get colder may be on the threshold of a killing freeze. Please use the next couple days to prepare before the freezing temperatures arrive this weekend.
