LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Facing a shortage, the Kentucky Blood Center is encouraging more people to give blood.

KBC is currently in critical need of four blood types: O-, A-, AB- and AB+,  meaning there is less than a day's supply available of those blood types to the more than 70 local hospitals it serves.

The nonprofit said it has not returned to pre-pandemic donation levels despite "modest improvements" in 2023. Leaders said it's a great time of year to commit to donating blood more regularly, or to give it a try for the first time.

"The need for blood is constant, so we appreciate this opportunity to thank all those (who) take the time to roll up their sleeves to give blood," Mandy Brajuha, vice president of External Relations at KBC, said in a news release Wednesday.

KBC said the need for volunteer donations "is great," as blood goes to trauma patients, those recovering from cancer treatments or undergoing surgeries, organ donations and transplants, and more.

January is also National Blood Donor Month. To say "thank you," KBC is offering donors a free hoodie at all locations through Jan. 20.
