LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — There was a good crowd Friday night at Animal House as people showed-up to take advantage of a free adoption event.

Officials said the shelter has been overcrowded for about three years, especially with dogs more than 40 pounds. Right now, the shelter is also seeing an influx of kittens.

Shelter officials said the free adoption event is a necessary strategy to help save animals, and the last-minute decision to have the event may have been helpful.

"We'll continue on this path of popping up and getting the word out as quickly as possible and hopefully crowding the shelter with people and getting pets out of here so we'll for sure do it again," Stephanie Jackson, a spokesperson for the shelter, said.

Animal House said to keep an eye out on social media for the next free adoption or foster event.
