LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Emergency Services hosted a fall blood drive Tuesday to provide a critical resource for trauma victims.

The drive was held at the EMS headquarters on Eastmoor Road in partnership with the Red Cross.

Organizers said donations will help support the pre-hospital blood program, which allows for in-ambulance blood transfusions for trauma victims.

"We started our blood program back in April this year and so far we've already given out 99 units of blood to patients out on the street, so it's a very important tool and resource that we have at our service," Lt. Greg Lile, with Louisville Metro EMS, said.

EMS team members also hosted a chili cook-off to raise money for the EMS Fund.

Another blood drive and cook-off is scheduled for next Tuesday, Oct. 21, at EMS headquarters from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Organizers encourage donors to make an appointment in advance of the blood drive. Appointments can be made by clicking here and entering sponsor code LEMS

The cook-off starts at 11 a.m. Participants are asked to donate $5 to sample and vote for their favorite.
