LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Local first responders spent some time Thursday morning bonding with students with special needs and learning differences.

FEAT of Louisville, PITT Academy and firefighters with St. Matthews Fire and EMS teamed up for the "Connect and Protect" event.

Students of all ages got to enjoy games and activities led by local firefighters.

"When I see them, I'll know what they look like and more about them and yeah, it's nice," PITT Academy student Michael Graham said.

The goal was to help the students get comfortable with first responders, and give the emergency professionals experience working with children with autism and special needs.

"A lot of our students have difficulty talking to individuals out in the community, individuals they meet, especially in emergency situations with how hectic it can be," Amanda Martin, with PITT Academy, said. "So this gives us more ability for our students and our first responders to get to know one another."

It is a two-day event, with more fun planned for the students on Friday.
