LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WBRB) -- Sheriffs across the country are recognizing 13-year-old Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel and his courageous battle against cancer.

DJ was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just five weeks to live, but he defied those odds and made it his mission to be sworn into 1,000 law enforcement agencies. Now, six years later, he has surpassed that goal, and was recently sworn-in as a Hardin County Sheriff's Deputy.

The department posted a picture of the teen being sworn-in at the National Sheriffs Association conference in Florida on Monday on its Facebook page Tuesday morning.

He was also sworn-in to other sheriff's offices including Jefferson, Nelson, and Shelby counties.

Over the last few months, DJ and his father have traveled the United States to fulfill his dream.

Unfortunately, DJ was recently diagnosed with three additional brain tumors and spinal tumors, but he's not letting that slow him down.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office is encouraging the public to keep DJ and his family in their thoughts.

"His passion for public service, despite unimaginable challenges, is deeply moving. He represents the very best of us," said Hardin County Sheriff John Ward.

Ward calls him a "beacon of hope and positivity."
