LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Stephen Yancey won the Democratic primary for Jefferson County sheriff Tuesday night, securing the nomination in the race to lead one of the county’s key law enforcement offices.

With the victory, Yancey advances to the November general election, where he'll face Republican Alexander W. Marson.

The race was called at 9:30 p.m. came after polls closed Tuesday. Yancey got 40% of votes with Steve Healey close behind by 36%.

"Sometimes in politics it ends up not being about the money spent but the character of the candidate," Yancey said.

The sheriff's race will determine the next elected leader following the death of longtime Sheriff John Aubrey in 2025. Interim Sheriff David James was appointed to complete the term but isn't seeking a full term in 2026.

Candidates emphasized experience in law enforcement as voters chose a nominee to lead the office following a leadership change.
