"Shortly before 3:28 this morning, a ShotSpotter call came in. The first LMPD officers arrived on scene at 3:32 to a home in the 2500 block of Garland Avenue. When officers arrived they could hear additional shots being fired. The run was updated to a break-in in progress. The preliminary information we have indicates that when officers arrived they saw a suspect coming out of a window with a handgun. The individual led officers on a foot chase. Officers gave verbal commands ordering the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect did not comply. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the subject several times. Officers immediately rendered life-saving aid. Medics rushed the individual to the University of Louisville Hospital where he is in critical condition.

This is still an active scene, and we are currently trying to determine if there are additional suspects in the home. This is yet -- and I repeat -- yet another example of the trying times we face as a community with the senseless gun violence. We are fortunate that the victim was not hurt, and none of the officers were hurt. There is body-worn camera footage, and we will publicly release it within 10 business days per our new officer involved shooting procedure. We are asking the public if you have any video or any relevant information in connection with this incident please contact us at 574-LMPD.
