LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One person was detained after breaching security at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) on Sunday.
It happened about 6:28 a.m. during the TSA security screening process, according to court documents. That's when TSA security agents said 60-year-old Michael Van Bree from Greenville, Ind., was being screened at a security checkpoint when a firearm was detected in his carry-on bag.
Van Bree then grabbed his two bags, including the bag with the firearm still in it, and started walking into the secure area. Airport police were called and a ground stop was placed on all airlines while the search continued. A review of surveillance footage showed Van Bree boarding a Southwest flight.
The airport's Public Safety and Airport Operations Departments found Van Bree on Southwest flight No. 3732 to Chicago-Midway as the plane was boarding, according to SDF spokesperson Natalie Chaudoin.
Passengers were deplaned and Van Bree was detained without incident, Chaudoin said. TSA security checkpoint and departing flight operations were stopped, as is standard procedure, and normal activity resumed at 7:45 a.m.
Passengers were then rescreened, and Southwest flight No. 3732 departed from SDF about 9:30 a.m.
"Rescreening of passengers is standard procedure anytime any aircraft is deplaned due to security reasons," Chaudoin said in a statement.
The gun was found in a backpack when Van Bree's bags were searched. He was cited by Louisville Airport Police for carrying a concealed weapon and taken into custody. He's due in arraignment court on Sept. 27.
