LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four children were killed and several people were hurt when a car smashed through a building during an after-school program Monday afternoon in a town outside of Springfield, Illinois, police said.

Officers responded to calls about a vehicle crashing through a building around 3:20 p.m. in Chatham. As reported by our sister station, WAND in Decatur, Illinois, the crash happened at the YNOT After School Camp.

Three of the victims were outside a building when they were hit, before the vehicle went through the building and hit another person, WAND reported, citing state police. The vehicle then exited the building.

The children who died are between the ages of 4 and 18 years old, according to WAND's reporting. At this time, it's unclear how many others were injured or what their conditions are. At least one of the victims was taken to a hospital by helicopter.

The driver, who was uninjured, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said. It's unclear if that person is facing charges or what may have caused the crash.
