LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A woman accused of assaulting a nurse at UofL Hospital in downtown Louisville over the weekend was in court Monday.

Mykeisha Johnson, 35, was arrested Saturday, April 26, after she allegedly attacked a nurse who walked past her room on the third floor as she was making her rounds.

According to court documents, Johnson told police she was angry at the staff for taking too long to discharge her, so she attacked the first person available.

Police said surveillance video of the incident appears to show Johnson choking the nurse and slamming her to the ground, then hitting her several times in the face and body.

During Monday's arraignment hearing, the prosecution upgraded the wanton endangerment charge against Johnson to strangulation. She is now charged with assault of a health care provider, menacing.

"You never know who you’re going to come in contact with," said a healthcare employee who works downtown.

The judge entered a not guilty plea on Johnson's behalf and set her bond at $10,000. If she posts bond, she will be under house arrest.

A UofL Health spokesperson told WDRB, "UofL Health does not tolerate any violence or abuse against its staff, patients, or visitors. LMPD has made an arrest and is handing the investigation. Our employee was treated and released."

This attack comes two weeks after police said Lacy Wilson stabbed a nurse outside of Jewish Hospital while waiting for a ride. Wilson is accused to have started an argument with the nurse before stabbing them multiple times with a screwdriver. Wilson left the scene and was later arrested.

After that attack, the Kentucky Nurses Association renewed its push to strengthen protections in the workplace for health care employees. A law passed in 2023 sponsored by Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Louisville, was intended to require health care facilities to implement violence prevention strategies. KNA said the law’s vague language has resulted in minimal enforcement.

The KNA said it is working with Nemes to improve the law to better protect employees.

Johnson's next court date is scheduled for May 6.
