LA GRANGE, Ky. (WDRB) — Neighbors in La Grange are being extra cautious this weekend after police reported more than a dozen vehicle thefts and break-ins across multiple neighborhoods.
Police said at least 15 vehicles were targeted early Friday morning along East and West Washington Street, East Main Street and North Fourth Avenue. In many cases, officers said suspects checked door handles, rummaged through vehicles and stole items.
"We don’t feel like this is a neighborhood that is commonly hit with crime very often," said Cathy Beardsley, who lives in the Washington Manor subdivision.
Police said the thieves appeared to be looking for guns, cash and garage door openers. Two vehicles were stolen and later recovered, including one found in Louisville by Louisville Metro Police, authorities said.
Resident Gary Murphy said the incidents were surprising for the area.

"Really I was surprised," Murphy said. "(My son said), 'You sure it happened here?' He said, 'Yeah.'"
Police said unlocked vehicles parked outside are often easy targets, though they believe at least a few of the vehicles had windows smashed. The department also released information about a "vehicle of interest" believed to be connected to the crimes and said the suspects, who are believed to be teens or young adults, had their faces covered.
"We’re definitely going to be on the lookout and locking up a little bit more," Beardsley said.
Murphy said he installed security cameras years ago "just in case."
