LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville police said an officer shot and injured an "intoxicated, argumentative" man that fired a gun before police were called to a home in the Camp Taylor neighborhood.

Louisville Metro Police said Sixth Division officers responding to a 911 call were dispatched to a home on Lincoln Avenue just after 10:30 p.m. That's in a neighborhood off Poplar Level Road near Interstate 264.

Deputy Chief Ryan Bates said in a statement that the caller told 911 dispatchers that a man in the home was intoxicated, got into an argument, grabbed a gun and fired a shot into the floor.

Bates said when officers arrived they found a man in the driveway with a gun to his head who was "obviously distraught."

Bates said others hiding in the home remained on the phone with 911. Officers worked quickly to get them out, but one person remained inside. When the distraught man went back into the home, an officer told him to drop the gun.

"The officer fired one shot, hitting the man in his arm. The man was taken to University Hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries," Bates said.

Everyone in the house was able to get out safely. No officers were injured.

"It was just crazy," a neighbor said. It all happened so fast."

The officer that fired the shot has not been identified. The officer is being placed on paid reassignment, which is LMPD policy while the shooting is investigated.

LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is handling the investigation. Bates said there is body worn camera footage that will be released within ten business days, per LMPD's Critical Incident protocol.
