LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A six-year-old child was seriously injured Saturday after a multi-vehicle crash in Louisville on Interstate 64 East.
Louisville Metro Police were called to I-64 eastbound near 22nd Street around 3:15 p.m. on a reported crash, said department Spokesperson Aaron Ellis.
Ellis said a car lost a wheel and pulled over to the shoulder to get out of the main roadway to wait for roadside assistance. In that area, there is no designated shoulder, so the car moved as far over as possible as to not be in the middle of the road.
A second car with three occupants saw the first car pulled over, and stopped to help, with their hazard lights activated.
A third car, Ellis said, driven by a man, didn't see the cars off the side of the road and collided with them, causing a chain reaction.
The driver in the first car, a man, received no injuries.
Two of the three occupants inside the second car were adults and transported to UofL Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Ellis said. The third occupant, a child thought to be 6 years old, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Norton Children's Hospital where the child was rushed into surgery. The child's condition is not known at this time.
LMPD's Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
All lanes of eastbound I-64 near 22nd Street were closed for more than three hours, causing delays out of Indiana.
