LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new housing community in Louisville is opening its doors to people who have struggled to find a stable place to live.

Volunteers of America Mid-States celebrated the opening of Monarch Station Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting in the Meriwether neighborhood.

The community on Bland Street has 80 apartments, including 20 set aside for people who have experienced chronic homelessness.

But the goal goes beyond giving people a key to a new apartment.

Residents can also receive one-on-one case management to help them find work, address health care needs and get connected with other resources.

Volunteers of America Mid-States President Jennifer Hancock said having a safe, reliable place to live can make it easier for people to tackle those challenges.

"Housing is the answer to long-term recovery, long-term stability for some of our most vulnerable neighbors," Hancock said.

She said knowing they have a safe place to sleep each night can take away some of the obstacles that make it harder to get back into the workforce or focus on their health.
