LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With rising costs due to inflation, it's becoming harder for some families to find money for things like new shoes.

That's why a west Louisville nonprofit stepped up to the plate to help those in need.

Friday, Feed The City, held its 23rd new shoe giveaway, with every size, shape and color of shoe.

"It's a small thing we can do to give back," said LaShonda Fields, who donated shoes for the giveaway. "We come to fellowship. That's what it is about as well, reaching out and touching someone."

For Fields, it's about touching those most in need.

"We had a leak in our home and the pipes burst, and we lost a lot of things," said Mary Smith, who took her niece and nephew to the giveaway. "That was a big financial burden, so now we are trying to replenish things in our home, so this is just one less thing we have to buy."

Feed The City is a nonprofit based at City Church International, located at 26th and Grand. Its mission is to work with children and families in poverty. Courses like money management, relationship building and drug rehabilitation are also offered.

Friday afternoon, Spectrum donated $2,500 to support the church's cause.

"Inflated prices causes hardships, so it is a good avenue for people to get what they need ... food on the table, and clothes on their back, shoes on their feet," said Edith Jones, who attended the giveaway to help.

For one 7-year-old girl who received shoes, in her own words, it was an experience that inspired her to become a volunteer.

"Seeing people like being brave up there, because it can give me the courage to do that when I grow up too," Caydnce Montgomery said.

One by one, families were gifted with something new and needed.

"I think it's God's work," said Fields.

Not only did they give away shoes, they also provided free haircuts and meals.

City Church International is open seven days a week, year-round. Pastor Larry D. Coleman said his congregation provides free meals every week. For more information, call (502) 772-5384 or send an email to citychurchinc1@att.net.
