LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — All students at Central High School were moved to the gym and cafeteria Wednesday morning when school officials said a "suspicious individual" tried to enter the building.

In a letter to families, Principal Tamela Compton said when they were alerted to the person outside, the school's Safety Resource Officer and Safety Administrator began a safety sweep of the campus. They eventually found the person and removed him/her from the area.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the campus was briefly placed on lockdown," Compton told families. "During this time, all students were quickly and safely moved to the cafeteria and large gym while the situation was addressed."

A Jefferson County Public Schools spokesperson said the person outside wasn't armed, and Compton said neither students nor staff were ever harmed. According to court documents, Derrick Mosley, 33, was arrested in connection to the case and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said he was standing outside the front entrance of the building "exhibiting unusual and concerning behavior."

According to his arrest citation, Mosley ignored commands from officers to remain outside the building, forcing his way through the front entrance and moving toward the school's security checkpoint. Police said the officer drew their guns, not knowing whether Mosley was armed, saying they "immediately treated (the situation) as a potential active threat inside the school environment."

At that point, Mosely followed their commands, laid down and put his hands behind his back, police said.

"Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping Central High School a safe learning environment," Compton told families in the letter. "Please remind your students of the importance of following all safety procedures and reporting anything that feels out of the ordinary to a trusted adult."
