LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A local high school cheer team became National Champions for the fifth time.
The Bullitt East Cheer Team won in the Super Large Division 1 category at the National High School Cheerleading Championship.
The competition was held in Orlando at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex over the weekend.
The team was welcomed back to the school with an escort and a celebration Tuesday night for their hard work and dedication.
The celebration was held on the school's football field moments after the team stepped off the plane.
"It feels really good. I think cheerleading is one of those sports that doesn't necessarily always get the recognition that it needs," Assistant Coach Brooke Stivers said. "And so it's really awesome to see this community support and everyone kind of come up here and celebrate the girls, because that's what it's really all about. Is these athletes that work really hard."
More than 1,100 teams from 34 states competed in the event.
