LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A burn victim has died nearly two years after his apartment complex was intentionally set on fire.
David Gambrell, 40, died in August from heart failure after years of around-the-clock care.
The fire happened in Frankfort in 2021.
Ibrahim Muhammad, an evicted tenant, was arrested for arson, assault, murder, and wanton endangerment.
"The moment he decided to set that fire, that was the end of David," Doug Gambrell, David Gambrell's brother, said. "And though the fire didn't kill him, the next two years did. And he was a tortured soul."
Two women also died in the fire.
It's not yet clear if the fire resulted in David Gambrell's death, as prosecutors are still waiting on autopsy results.
Doug Gambrell hopes Muhammad's assault charge will be upgraded to murder in his brother's case.
