LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two Louisville Metro Council members want the community to help stop Family Dollar stores from selling adult beverages.

Councilpersons Donna Purvis, D-5, and Tammy Hawkins, D-1, want to prevent Family Dollar from applying for licenses to allow the stores to sell beer and liquor in west Louisville.

Purvis and Hawkins said allowing liquor sales at Family Dollar will steer other businesses away from the area.

"It is up to the constituents, it is up to the city, it is up to the community to put a stop to these things, if you don't want these kinds of businesses popping up in these areas," Hawkins said.

Purvis is asking community members to write letters of opposition to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

"These districts are in dire need of positive and strong economic development," said Purvis.

Letters must be sent by this Friday, Jan. 5, by mailing them to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, 500 Mero Street 2NE33, Frankfort, Kentucky, 40601.
