LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Not sure if a text or email is legit or a scam? Know the words and phrases only scammers use because they are not really located in the United States.

Fake voting text messages, fake emails from your bank, and more.

There are several giveaways that a text or email is a scam.

The most common is the three-word phrase: "Would you kindly?"

Scammers tend to live in other countries, where English is not their first language, and as a result, they tend to use old-fashioned language, British spellings, or just awkward grammar.

Other red flag phrases include:

  • "Dear sir or madam," no one in the U.S. says "madam" these days.
  • Starting a sentence with "Am," such as "Am contacting you because of a problem."
  • Any grammatical or spelling error.

Coming soon, AI may soon make these warning signs obsolete. A foreign scammer can use an American-based AI system to generate normal sentences, making it easier than ever to convince someone that they're real.
