LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thousands of Humana workers packed downtown Louisville on Wednesday to give back to the community.Â
Wearing green T-shirts, nearly 5,000 Humana workers met at Waterfront Park to kick off the inaugural Humana Community Day. Humana leaders said giving back to their community is a priority, so they want to extend that commitment company-wide.
"We care about our community," said Amanda Paul, who works for Humana. "We care about each other and we care about making a difference."
Humana Community Day also kicks off their "month of impact" nationwide, hoping to give more than $10 million worth of volunteering and acts of services to Humana communities across the country.
And one of those began Wednesday morning at the KFC Yum! Center. Employees helped bag food to assemble 1 million meal kits. Once finished, U.S. Hunger will distribute the meal kits in Louisville and Lexington.
In February, Humana announced it will vacate its Main Street headquarters over the next two years. Company leaders say even though the company's footprint is changing in Louisville, they will still make giving back a priority.
"I absolutely think we're going to continue," Humana Chief Administrative Officer Tim Huval said Wednesday. "This is a great test for us in other communities, and our commitment to the mayor's office and the whole community isn't going to stop."
Workers also helped to clean up the waterfront Wednesday morning and will also attend the Norton Sports & Learning Center in the Russell neighborhood to help residents learn about healthy nutrition.
All the volunteering is tied to the company's objectives of healthy nutrition, environment and activity.
