Indiana lawmakers seek balance between innovation, job security in use of AI in workforce

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana lawmakers are taking a deeper dive into AI's impact on the state's workforce.

Thursday, the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership told a legislative task force that nearly half of the country's manufacturers use AI, and more than 80% of manufacturers plan to increase their investment in AI over the next two years.

The Indiana Manufacturers Association said the biggest problem its members face is staffing shortages, and that manufacturers are not leaning on AI to replace jobs.

"You're trying to thread the needle to figure out what harms do I need to legislate on now to make sure they don't happen, but at the same time I don't want to limit innovation," Rep. Matt Pierce, D-Bloomington, said.

Task force members said finding the balance between innovation and job security is a top priority.

"My concern is when do we being to transition people out, does it cost me my job, you might say," Rep. Matt Lehman, R-AI Task Force co-chair, said.

The committee's next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8, which will focus on AI in education.
