LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Metro Louisville's minimum wage ordinance is set to take effect Wednesday after a Kentucky Court of Appeals judge denied business groups' request for an emergency injunction to stop the law

In an order Tuesday, appellate Judge Joy Kramer rejected the business groups' argument that their members would suffer "irreparably injury" by having to pay at least $7.75 an hour while their challenge to the law works its way through the court system.

"Requiring employers to pay a higher minimum wage may certainly present a burden to them, that likely has far reaching consequences," Kramer wrote. "But, maintaining a lower minimum wage for hard-working employees has consequences as well."

The minimum wage in Jefferson County will rise from $7.25 an hour to $7.75 an hour on Wednesday.

The base wage will step up to $8.25 per hour on July 1, 2016 and then to $9 per hour on July 1, 2017, with annual adjustments for inflation thereafter.
