New AT&T initiative designed to help low-income families get internet access

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's an effort to help connect low-income families to the internet.

AT&T's new program "Access" is providing low-income families with internet for as little as $5 a month. The internet company says it's also waiving all equipment and installation fees.

Families must have at least one member enrolled in Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to qualify.

AT&T officials say the program aims to help families do homework, look for jobs and pay bills.

"Internet connection is about economic empowerment, and this access program offers that empowerment to low income families who need it the most," said Hood Harris, a spokesperson for AT&T.

Families can apply for "Access" online through the AT&T website or in person at the Louisville Urban League.
