LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new program is helping Louisville residents prepare for their futures for free.
Legacy planning services are now available through the Louisville Financial Empowerment Center.
The Legacy Planning Program is a one-on-one financial counseling program that offers residents access to help with legacy planning, and taking steps to protect their assets at no cost.
Louisville's FEC said the "vast majority of Americans" own at least one asset, such as a bank account, 401K or a home. It also said nearly 70% of Americans don't have a will, legacy or estate plan. Legacy planning will help by covering topics like adding beneficiaries and creating documents like a will and determining powers of attorney.
"By adding legacy planning to the Louisville Financial Empowerment Center services, we're making sure that legal and financial security aren't luxuries—they're for everyone," Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a news release Monday morning. "This initiative helps residents protect what they've built, provide for their loved ones, and build stronger neighborhoods across our city."
By increasing the public's access to this information, leaders said more people will be able to protect their assets for their future and future generations.
