LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Norton West Louisville Hospital is almost ready to open. It's the first new hospital built in west Louisville in well over a century.
Norton Healthcare announced Thursday that the new hospital will open Nov. 11.
The hospital is on the Norton Healthcare Goodwill West Opportunity Campus at 28th and Broadway. In addition to the medical resources coming soon, the campus already provides social services with community partners to help people with finances, employment and more.
The Norton West Louisville Hospital will include a 24/7 emergency department, operating rooms and 20 inpatient beds to start. It will also have primary care doctors, outpatient, specialty services, a retail pharmacy and imaging including X-ray, CT and MRI.
Outpatient offices will include adult and pediatric care along with women's services including obstetrics and gynecology. There will also be cardiology, orthopedics, diabetes care and behavioral health services.
"My hope for this hospital is that when you come in and we have to admit you or treat you in the emergency room, that, that is not the end of your healthcare journey. We want to get you established with primary care doctors so that is a continuous journey to a healthier you," said Corenza Townsend, the chief administrative officer for the Norton West Louisville Hospital.
Thursday, Townsend wouldn't give an exact number as to how many patients Norton Healthcare expected to see at this new hospital annually, but said "a lot" and that she is hopeful this new location will provide better access for many people in the community.
As construction comes to a close, Townsend said things that still need to be done include adding furniture and finishing the greenery outside the hospital.
"You heard me mention the grass and the flowers. That sounds really, really small," she said. "But I'll tell you one of the things that was mentioned on our survey was a lot of natural light and greenspace ..."
Based on community feedback, the hospital will also have a centralized check-in area, community room, and a food pantry. The facility will also feature work from local artists.
According to Townsend, more than 80% of employees hired so far for the hospital came from outside the Norton Healthcare group.
"So instead of borrowing from our internal folks, we were able to give people in the community an opportunity to join our wonderful family here. We are staffed to the point where we are ready to open. There are a couple of opportunities to still be able to apply," Townsend said.
