LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bags of fresh broccoli are coming off of shelves at some Walmart stores.

The brand Braga Fresh issued a voluntary recall for its 12 ounce bags of Marketside Broccoli florets. Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are concerned the broccoli may have been contaminated with listeria. The bags of broccoli were sold at Walmart locations in 20 states including Kentucky and Indiana.

Braga Fresh said the potentially contaminated broccoli is past its "best if used by date" of Dec. 10, 2024. But those who kept it in the freezer should throw it away.

No illnesses have been reported, but, according to the FDA, Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may also suffer only short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

The voluntary advisory does not apply to any other Marketside or Braga Fresh produced products.
