LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 13-year-old Louisville boy was identified as the person recovered from the Ohio River near the Greenwood Boat Ramp Wednesday morning.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed the teen is Derrick Saunders Jr. The corner listed the cause of his death as "consistent with drowning" and ruled it an accident.
Saunders' body was pulled from the water by dive teams around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, after almost two days of searching. He was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. Monday after he jumped into the water from the ramp and "did not resurface," according to Louisville Metro Police.
LMPD Spokesperson John Bradley said his body was found about a mile south from the Greenwood Boat Ramp.
"This particular area of the river in our jurisdiction has a lot of eddies and a lot of places where the currents come together, a lot of turbulence in the water here, especially near the river's edge," Bradley said.
Bradley said it's been hard seeing Saunders' family go through this challenging time as they've waited for answers.
"As a parent, and of course as a human being, I can't imagine the incredible emotional grief and loss that they're feeling," he said.
LMPD officers were called in to help Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Monday night after a report of "a person in the Ohio River near the Greenwood Boat Ramp."
Recovery operations were stopped after Saunders was found Wednesday morning.
