LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Members of Louisville Metro Council's Public Safety Committee advanced an ordinance Wednesday to establish the Louisville Parks Police.

The ordinance now heads to the full council for consideration. If it passes there, the new department would operate under Louisville Parks and Recreation and primarily provide services to Metro Parks. But officers could be called in to assist other law enforcement agencies.

They would have the same training and police powers as Louisville Metro Police.

Committee members say tightening security in parks, especially at night, could help reduce violence in the city.
