LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police officers surrounded a Portland neighborhood late Thursday night after the report of a domestic situation. One person died and another is critically injured.
Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said officers were called to a home in the 400 block of North 24th Street around 8:45 p.m. on the report of a domestic incident. The caller told dispatchers a family member was pointing a gun at people in the home, including a child, and said they believed the person was "intoxicated on possible narcotics."
Once on scene, police heard loud arguing coming from a room upstairs, Gwinn-Villaroel said. Officers "attempted to have a conversation" with the individuals in the room. As the situation escalated, officers forced entry, and shots were fired.
Police have not clarified if officers broke down the front door or were already in the home, or if the deceased had a gun or who fired the fatal shots.
"It's devastating to see it out there," said William Dickinson, who lives near the home where the shooting took place. "It's not too bad during the day. At night is when everything starts happening."
Officers recovered firearms in the room and rendered emergency aid to two individuals. One person died at the scene, Gwinn-Villaroel said, and the other was taken to UofL Hospital in critical condition.
"Again, I am asking Louisville if we would truly come together and work together to fight this violent crime, individuals in possession of guns in our city that should not be in possession of them," she said in news conference around 1 a.m. Friday. "This must stop. I'm pleading for your help this evening."
Just down the street, some community members met Friday at a local coffee shop, Cup of Joy, to work on solutions to the violence in their neighborhood.
"It's sad. It really is sad," Dickinson said. "That's why we're here, to reach the people that's been on drugs for a number of years ... They come in here all the time. We try to reach out to them."
Body camera footage of the shooting will be released within 10 business days, per the department's new protocol, the chief said.
