LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The former Letcher County sheriff accused of killing a Kentucky district judge plans to present a case for an insanity defense.
That's according to a new court filing by the attorney of former Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines.
The filing said Stines intends to present expert evidence relating to a mental disease or condition, bearing on the issue of guilty and punishment.
He also intends to present a defense of insanity, as well as a defense of extreme emotional disturbance, according to the filing.
Stines was charged with the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins last September. According to police, Stines walked into the judge's chambers, tried calling his daughter on Mullins' phone, and his own phone, before shooting Mullins multiple times.
Stines pleaded not guilty.
