LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville police said an "intoxicated, suicidal" man was arrested for pointing a gun at officers in the Parkland neighborhood, prompting an officer to fire back.

Louisville Metro Police Division 2 Commander Russell Miller said officers were called to a home on Dumesnil Street just before midnight Wednesday due to an intoxicated man having a mental health crisis.

That man has now been identified Garad Amir Garad.

LMPD said in a written statement Thursday that officers tried to talk to Garad when he pulled out a weapon and pointed it at officers. One officer returned gunfire.

Miller said officers gave Garad multiple orders to drop the weapon. The man eventually dropped it and was taken into custody.

The suspect and officers weren't hit by gunfire, and neither the officer or Garad were hurt.

An arrest citation says two of Garad's family members told police Garad punched them, hurting one of them so badly she blacked out. It also says Garad damaged walls and electronics while in custody.

Garad is facing charges of wanton endangerment of a police officer, strangulation and assault.

LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is investigating.
