LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One man is in custody and another man is in the hospital after a stabbing late Wednesday night in the Park Hill neighborhood.

In a release, Louisville Metro Police said the incident happened about 11:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of Bolling Avenue, near Dixie Highway and W. Hill Street. That's where officers with LMPD's 2nd Division officers responded to a report of a stabbing. The victim greeted police with a "deep laceration to his right hand, left elbow and his nose," according to the arrest slip.

He told police the incident started when he was taking out his trash and confronted his neighbor for allowing his dog to run outside without a leash. That's when the neighbor -- 52-year-old James Lawrence Jackson -- became irate and began threatening the victim and his wife.

The victim told police Jackson came toward him, swinging "a knife that is bigger than a kitchen knife but smaller than a machete." He said he used his hands to defend himself. At one point, Jackson's wife jumped in and had two of her teeth knocked out during the struggle. That's when the victim went into the house and called police.

Jackson's wife told police she was trying to break up the fight, and doesn't believe the victim intentionally hit her.

The victim was taken to UofL Hospital for treatment.

Jackson told police he was in his yard with his dogs with the gate closed when the victim began yelling and making threats so he "addressed the situation." Jackson said the victim swung at his wife at some point, and that's when he "slammed the victim and grabbed a rock in the process and used that to hit the victim" before backing away and going back inside.

Investigators were unable to locate a weapon, but did observe a blood trail on the victim's property that backed up his story, so they arrested Jackson on charges of assault and terroristic threatening.
