LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man armed with two guns was shot multiple times by a Louisville Metro Police officer while he tried to carjack and "potentially kidnap" a woman in the drive-thru at a local Walmart, Interim Chief Paul Humphrey said Wednesday.

Around 12:15 p.m., Humphrey said a Kentucky State Police trooper was in a vehicle pursuit that ended with a collision at Outer Loop and New Cut Road.

One man in the car was arrested by the trooper, later identified by court documents as Jeremy Bozarth, 44, of Louisville. Another person in the car, who Humphrey said was armed with two guns, ran toward the Walmart at that intersection.

Humphrey said that man was inside the Walmart when LMPD officers arrived on scene and located him, at which point he ran outside and jumped in the passenger seat of a car in the drive-thru at the pharmacy. Police made several verbal commands for the man to get out of the car before opening fire, shooting the man multiple times.

A woman was in the driver's seat during the entire incident, Humphrey said. When asked if the man fired at police before he was shot, Humphrey simply said it's still under investigation.

LMPD said in a social media post around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday that what had previously been called a "critical investigation" was a shooting involving one of its officers.

Humphrey said the man was transported to UofL Hospital, where he's expected to survive.

"We are very grateful that no one else was injured in this incident," Humphrey said. "We are talking about an armed suspect running from police in the middle of the afternoon, running through a crowd at Walmart. You can only imagine the scene that may have been inside at that time and what this did to that victim who was just minding her business trying to pick up a prescription."

Whitney Taylor, who said she was inside Walmart when everything happened, said the man was "frantic" running through the store.

"The next thing you know, a stranger comes back there and said we all had to leave (because) there's been gunshots outside," Taylor said.

The LMPD Public Integrity Unit is taking over the case, and the officer who fired was placed on paid administrative reassignment, per department policy. Body camera video will be released within 10 business days, Humphrey said.

Court documents show Bozarth is charged with reckless driving, speeding more that 26 mph, fleeing from police, wanton endangerment and other charges. He is expected in court Thursday morning.
