'Extremely dangerous' tornado confirmed to have touched down in Hart County

HART COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) — The National Weather Service said a "large and extremely dangerous" radar-confirmed tornado touched down Tuesday evening in Munfordville, Kentucky.

The NWS described the tornado as a life-threatening situation. Viewer video shows a possible tornado in the area of Horse Cave, Kentucky. It can be seen crossing Interstate 65.

The NWS said at 5:45 p.m. that it was a "significant tornado" on the ground in the area of Munfordville and central Hart County.

Substantial damage can be seen on Dixie Highway in Munfordville. Multiple power lines and trees had fallen near the roadway.

People in the area of Rowletts, just south of Munfordville, described "torrential rain" and "ferocious" straight line winds.

One volunteer firefighter said it hit been at least 40 years since this area saw any kind of storm damage.

Severe storms hit several Kentucky counties Tuesday afternoon. A reported tornado in Grayson County resulted in widespread damage left multiple people injured, and several other Kentucky counties were under tornado warnings.

The full scope of the damage across the state is unknown at this time. The NWS said it will conduct weather surveys Wednesday morning.
