LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An Elizabethtown, Kentucky, man who the FBI said was the first person to illegally enter the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, learned his sentence Tuesday.

Michael Sparks will serve 4 years and 5 months in prison after being convicted by a federal jury in March.

Sparks was found guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder, as well as misdemeanors including disorderly conduct in the Capitol.

Evidence during his trial including video surveillance showing Sparks being the first rioter to enter the Capitol through a broken window, and then chasing a Capitol police officer up a flight of stairs.
