LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police said the man shot by police Friday night after they said he refused to drop his weapon after running from a traffic stop is facing several drug charges.

Marvin Smith was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at South 4th Street and Central Avenue, near Churchill Downs, just after 9 p.m. 

Police said Smith exited the vehicle with a pistol with an "extended magazine" and fled from officers, who pursued and gave verbal commands for Smith to drop the weapon.

When he didn't drop the weapon, he was shot by Sgt. Joshua Arnwine, LMPD said Tuesday.

Smith is still in the hospital, but faces several drug charges including trafficking a controlled substance for fentanyl, cocaine, opioids and meth. LMPD said he will face more charges. 

Arnwine is part of LMPD's Criminal Interdiction Division and has been with LMPD since 2016, the department said.

Body camera footage of the shooting will be released within 10 business days, per the department's new protocol, LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said Friday.
