LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) — A critical deadline is approaching for Kentucky  travelers looking to use their driver’s license for air travel this summer.

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights, marking the end of a years-long extension of the deadline.

The REAL ID, passed by Congress 20 years ago, was created to enhance security standards in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Since then, the deadline to obtain the ID has been delayed multiple times, but now, there will be no more extensions in Kentucky.

For travelers who already have a valid military ID or U.S. Passport, the REAL ID requirement does not apply. However, for those without these forms of identification, the REAL ID will be necessary to board domestic flights, access certain federal buildings and enter nuclear facilities.

“People who have changed their name in recent years—whether due to marriage, divorce, or a death in the family—will need to provide documentation proving that name change when applying for the REAL ID,” said Lynda Lambert, spokesperson for AAA East Central. “It’s essential to bring all required documents to avoid delays.”

To obtain a REAL ID at a driver’s license branch, applicants will need to present several documents: proof of their name, date of birth, social security number, and two forms of Kentucky residency, such as a utility bill or tax form. Missing even one of these documents will result in a rescheduled appointment, and with delays at branches, it’s advised to act quickly to avoid complications.

The cost for a REAL ID is $24 for four years or $48 for eight years.

For travelers who don’t plan to fly until mid-summer, the May 7 deadline doesn’t apply, as long as they show a REAL ID on the day of their flight.

As the May 7 deadline looms, those planning to travel this summer are encouraged to act sooner rather than later to ensure they have the necessary ID.
