Person on smart phone generic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you feel like you're never really off work, you're not alone.

It's difficult to unplug, but a new law proposed in New York City could make it a requirement. It's part of the "Do Not Disturb" movement.

It's the idea that employees should be allowed to disconnect from work after clocking out.

The bill would protect employees from being fired if they choose not to answer their phone or emails while they're off work. Employees who feel abused, can even file a complaint.

"The majority of employees want to see this happen. They believe that technology is hindering their daily lives," New York City Council member Rafael Espinal said.

If a violation is confirmed, the employer would pay the city a fine of $250 and pay the employee an additional fine of $500.

Opponents to the bill say it would be too confusing and difficult to legislate.
